Building Permits
Building permits are required for all construction within the Town of Rico
- Building in town is subject to the following:

- 2006 International Building Code
- 2006 International Residential Code
- 2006 International Mechanical Code
- 2006 International Fire Code
- 2006 International Existing Building Code
- 2006 International Energy Conservation Code
- Electrical, Plumbing, and fuel gas installation are governed by the State of Colorado.
Excavation Permits
Excavation permits are required for the following:
- Utility installations and repairs not including septic systems.
- Road and driveway construction and repair.
- Excavation disturbing more than three cubic yards of dirt that is not associated with an existing building permit, a landscape activity or test holes for septic systems.
Septic Permit
Septic Permits are required for the installation of all Individual Sewage Disposal Systems (ISDS):
Construction of ISDS within the Town of Rico are subject to the requirements of Town of Rico Ordinance 2017 –01, which incorporates Colorado Department of Health and Environment Regulation 43. ISDS plans must be signed and stamped by an engineer licensed in the State of Colorado.

- One-story detached accessory structures used as tool storage sheds, playhouses and similar uses provided the floor area does not exceed 200 square feet.
- Fences not over six (6) feet high.
- Retaining walls not over four (4) feet high from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall unless they are supporting a surcharge or impounding Class I, II or IIIA liquids.
- Water tanks supported directly upon grade if the capacity does not exceed 5,000 gallons and the ratio of height to diameter width does not exceed 2 to 1.
- Sidewalks and driveways not more than 30 inches (762 mm) above adjacent grade, and not over any basement of story below and are not part of an accessible route. (One- and two-family dwellings are restricted to the height limit.)
- Painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, countertops, and similar finish work.
- Prefabricated swimming pools accessory to Group R-3 occupancy that are less than 24 inches deep, do not exceed 5,000 gallons and are installed entirely above ground.
- Swings and other playground equipment accessory to detached one- and two-family dwellings.
- Window awnings supported by an exterior wall which do not project more than 54 inches from the exterior wall and do not require additional support of Group R-3 and U occupancies.
- Decks, platforms, walkways, etc., that measure less than 30" from the standing surface to the adjacent grade within 36" of edge of standing surface.
- Re-siding and re-roofing without alteration to the wall or roof structure.
- Temporary motion picture, television and theater stage sets and scenery.
- Shade cloth structures constructed for nursery or agricultural purposes, not including service systems.
- Non fixed and movable fixtures, cases, racks, counters, and partitions not over 5 feet 9 inches in height

Water Tap Size Cost of Tap 3/4" Water Tap $12,500 1" Water Tap $22,500 1 1/4" Water Tap ** $37,000 1 1/2" Water Tap ** $50,000 2" Water Tap ** $86,000 Installation fees are $1,500 per tap. Fees include water meter. All other materials must be supplied by the owner.
**These taps shall be subject to a minimum fee as shown in this tap fee schedule and shall be required to submit a water demand analysis for the proposed project. The Building Official shall require an increased fee as indicated by the demand analysis.
